A facing gym leader is a challenge to trainers it's like a test for school relying. on skills and intellengence to pass. Getting a badge is like passing a class proving you actually passed. Their job is to see what you learn through your journey seeing if you actually learned through it. And part of your journey is beating them. And they also help trainers to train up your pokemon.
